AG Murrill's Louisiana Bureau of Investigation arrests Arkansas man for defrauding State Retirement System for more than $33,000

Agents with Attorney General Liz Murrill's Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) arrested an Arkansas man for defrauding our State Retirement System for more than $33,000.

LBI received a request for assistance from Louisiana State Employees Retirement System (LASERS) regarding allegations of fraud.

LASERS officials learned an unknown person(s) had been fraudulently receiving benefits in the name of a LASERS member who has been deceased since August 2020. 

During this investigation, LBI agents discovered evidence identifying 50-year-old Derrick Mullins, of Forrest City, Arkansas, the deceased retiree’s nephew, as the perpetrator.

Evidence also disclosed that, in the period between August 2020 and December 2024, Mullins defrauded LASERS of more than $33,000. 

On Tuesday, October 21st, LBI agents arrested Mullins pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the 19th Judicial District Court pertaining to felony theft charges.

Mullins was booked without incident at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.   

He is charged with:

  • 20 Count(s) of LRS 14:67 - Theft

The investigation is ongoing.
